Day 1: Honfleur to Bayeux
Our private car and driver will pick you up from your hotel in Paris at 9.30 am. Depending on your previous travel arrangements, other pick-up points such as Amiens or Rouen are available (on request).
First stop today will be the beautiful town of Honfleur, probably one of Normandy’s most picturesque and well-preserved ports. Activity is centred on the Vieux Bassin or 'old harbour' with its slate-fronted houses. The area oozes charm with renovated buildings such as salt warehouses now home to art exhibitions. The town is a meeting place for artists with many wonderful galleries dotted throughout the streets of the old town.
Free time for a stroll and lunch before heading off through the elegant coastal resorts of Deauville and Trouville (drive through).
Overnight at the small luxury boutique hotel Villa Lara in the centre of Bayeux. Free time this evening to explore the town and select a restaurant from some of the many available.
Day 2: Bayeux Tapestry & D-Day beaches
After breakfast you will have time to visit the amazing Bayeux Tapestry. Listed as a “Memory of the World” by UNESCO, the Bayeux Tapestry is an embroidery of 70 metres, made in the 11th century. The tapestry celebrates the conquest of England by William, Duke of Normandy. The linen canvas was probably embroidered by monks in the south of England after the Battle of Hastings in 1066.
Next, your guide will take you on a drive along the coast to visit the monuments and museums of the D-Day beaches.
Overnight at Villa Lara in Bayeux.
Day 3: Mont Saint Michel, Cancale & Saint Malo
Depart after breakfast for the famous site of Mont St Michel. This “Wonder of the Western World” forms a tower in the heart of an immense bay invaded by the highest tides in Europe. Construction started in 966 and continued throughout the ages until around 1900. Visit the abbey and then have some time to explore the old streets surrounding it.
After your visit, you will depart for Brittany and your first stop will be in Cancale, the “oyster capital” of France. Sit in one of the waterfront restaurants and watch the activity of the oyster farmers as they race against the tide to tend to their oyster beds. The coast around Cancale has the highest tides in France. The view of the sea and the bay changes dramatically with the state of the tide. This is a perfect opportunity to taste the local oysters over lunch (own).
Next, visit Saint Malo before arriving at your overnight destination Château du Colombier, which is set in magnificent grounds just outside the city.
Day 4: Dinan & Rennes
After breakfast, you will depart via the scenic road along the Rance river to the perfectly restored medieval town of Dinan. This modern market town with a medieval heart is surrounded by ramparts. The well-kept half-timbered houses and cobbled streets of its old town have an impressive unity. Below the town you will find the old port, once a busy harbour from which cloth was shipped, it is now a quiet backwater.
Lunch in Dinan (own arrangements).
By mid-afternoon, you will arrive in Rennes from where you can take the train back to Paris or spend an extra day or two, in the capital of Brittany. Contact us for more information about accommodation and tours in Brittany.
