Villers-Bretonneux is a place where history and personal memory meet. The village saw fighting from August 1914, but it became forever linked to Australia on 24 April 1918, when Australian troops halted the German offensive.
Since the construction of the Victoria School in 1927 and the inauguration of the Australian Memorial in 1938, ties with Australia have grown ever stronger. Today, annual Anzac Day commemorations keep the memory alive for visitors and locals alike.
Close to Sonia’s French prelude – in the 1970s, Sonia’s father, representing the Air Attaché’s office at the Australian Embassy, had the honour of laying the wreath at the Mairie, a proud family connection to this historic village.
