Your hosts live just around the corner and will be available at all times to help make your stay as enjoyable as possible. Dominique and Andrew have been living in Uzès for 15 years and they both love the place. Dominique has a boutique in town and Andrew is an architect specialising in restoration.
The house location couldn’t be better. The effective centre of Uzès is a wonderful arcaded square called Place aux Herbes and the house is no more than a minutes’ walk away. And there are all the other interesting things to discover in town: none are more than 5 minutes walk from the house.
The house itself is set back from the boulevard and is actually on a little used ‘pedestrian only’ walkway. In medieval times, this walkway was part of the city wall but today it serves as a barrier from traffic. But there’s something else about this part of Uzès that is greatly appreciated: there is a rare atmosphere of seclusion and calm…
Just like many other medium sized towns there are busy boulevards with shops, cafés and restaurants but at Uzès there is something else. The architecture is special and this adds another dimension to the town. The Place aux Herbes opens itself up to the weekly market, Wednesday and Saturday, emanating Provencal charm. This is a must for foodies: stock up on garlicky olives and extra virgin olive oil, fragrant herbs, pots of thyme-flavoured honey, and small jars of snail and shallot spread (escargotine)!
On one side of Uzès, the town abruptly and agreeably gives way to nature. This is the valley d’Eure, a protected area of considerable historic value and a great place for walks and picnics. Other places to visit nearby include the roman aqueduct Pont du Gard and the roman arenas at Nîmes and Arles. The fortified town of Avignon is a must also. And for those wanting to get away from it all, there are lovely villages and places of scenic beauty to discover. The river at Collias is a favourite with families with young children and is only 10 minutes away. For those wanting to see the sea, the beaches are a little more than an hour by car.
